We are facing unprecedented global challenges, related to energy, food and clean water, just to mention a few. Is it possible to achieve economic development and at the same time safeguard the environment? The engineer of the future has the potential to largely contribute to the solution of global challenge provided he has the right engineering skills and a good understanding of environmental conditions.

In this lecture, the environmental challenges are highlighted, in particular with respect to energy. The role of the engineer of the future is elucidated. The Master of Science in engineering programs at KTH Royal Institute of Technology is presented. In addition, innovation and entrepreneurship as an important aspect of today’s engineering education is discussed and exemplified.
