Secretary Zhang Maiceng Led a Delegation to Visit Famous Universities in Australia, New Zealand and Japan to Promote Substantive Cooperation

From July 31 to August 8, Zhang Maiceng,Party Secretary of Xi'an Jiaotong University led a delegation to visit The University of Western Australia,New South Wales University and Queensland University in Australia, Wellington Victoria University in New Zealand, Yamanashi University, Tokyo University, Waseda University and Institute of Chemistry and Science in Japan to promote substantive international cooperation. During this period, the delegation also held talks with alumni studying in Sydney, Australia and Tokyo, Japan.

On the morning of August 1, Secretary Zhang and his party held in-depth talks with President Tang Fuwei of Western Australia University, Assistant President John Dell, and Dean of Institute of Technology Tim Sercombe. Both sides agreed to conduct exchanges and cooperation in scientific research, personnel training and cooperation with Silk Road University Alliance, especially in the fields of ocean, life, aerospace engineering and radio wave cosmology. During the talks, Secretary Zhang focused on the "Double First Class" construction of Xi'an Jiaotong University and the development plan and connotation construction of China Western Science and Technology Innovation Port. After the talks, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding and a student exchange agreement.

On the afternoon of August 1, Secretary Zhang and his party visited students who are participating in the 2018 summer research internship program at Western Australia University, encouraging them to do a good job in scientific research while learning from the management practices of Western Australia University.

On the afternoon of August 2, the delegation visited Queensland University and held talks with Alan Rowan, director of the Center for Biological Engineering and Nanotechnology Research, Aleksandar Rakic, vice president of the Department of Engineering, and Professor Chen Chen of the Biomedical Institute. The two sides discussed the joint training of students and the cooperation between industry and research. Professor David Mee, representative of the Institute of Mechanical and Mineral Technology, Jin Zou, Dean of the Nano Science Department, and Professor Geoff Wang, Director of the China Program at the Institute of Chemical Engineering, attended the talks.

On the afternoon of August 3, Secretary Zhang and his party visited the University of New South Wales and held in-depth talks with Vice President Laurie Pearcey. Paul Munroe, Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Joe Dong, Professor of the School of Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering, and Dr Gabrielle Appleby, Vice President of the Law School, attended the talks. The two sides reviewed their in-depth cooperation in the fields of Silk Road University Alliance, mechanical engineering and law, and agreed to strengthen scientific research, personnel training and cultural exchanges within the framework of Silk Road University Alliance, indicating that the two universities can further strengthen cooperation in such disciplines as nuclear energy, photovoltaic energy, energy storage, electrical communication and internet of things. During the talks, Secretary Zhang introduced the goal of building a "Double First Class" school and the concept of international cooperation, and said that the school would actively promote and participate in the cooperation between China's Nine-Universities Alliance and Australia's Eight-Universities Alliance.

On the evening of August 3, Secretary Zhang and his party held a discussion with some alumni who worked and studied in Sydney. The delegation gave a detailed account of the latest development of the Alma mater from the aspects of the university's development strategy, personnel training, scientific research, personnel policy and international cooperation. Secretary Zhang preached the spirit of moving to the west and wished everyone success in their work and study abroad.

On the afternoon of August 4, Secretary Zhang and his party visited Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, and held talks with President Grant Guiford, Vice President Michael Wilson and Assistant President Michael McRae. The two sides decided to carry out cooperation and exchanges in key areas with common advantages, including production, study and research, industrial design, artificial intelligence, humanities and social sciences, etc. After the talks, Secretary Zhang and President Grant Guiford jointly signed a memorandum of cooperation between the two schools. Peter whiteford, President of the Graduate School, prof. Marc Aurel schnabel of the Institute of Architecture and Design, Mengjie Zhang, Vice President of the Institute of Research and Innovation, etc. attended the talks.

On the afternoon of August 6, Secretary Zhang and his party visited Yamanashi University in Japan and held in-depth talks with President Furuya Koji and others. The two sides reached a consensus on developing Chinese teaching, teacher-student exchanges and cultural and legal exchanges. Zhang Hua, Assistant to the President of Yamanashi University, and Xiong Dayun, deputy director of the International Department, attended the talks.

On the morning of August 7, Secretary Zhang and his party visited Tokyo University. Executive Vice President Haneda Masashi met with the delegation. The two sides reviewed the basic situation of cooperation between the two universities since the signing of the exchange agreement for 14 years, and the cooperation and exchange between Tokyo University and Shaanxi Province. They agreed that the two universities should actively promote the exchange of humanities while strengthening the exchange of engineering. The two sides also reached consensus on expanding the scale of student exchanges, training levels and further scientific research cooperation. Professor Koseki Junichi of the Ministry of Engineering and International Department of Tokyo University attended the talks.

On the afternoon of August 7, Secretary Zhang and his party visited Waseda University. President Kamada Kaoru and Vice President Hashimoto Shuji met with the delegation. The two sides reviewed the history and current situation of cooperation and exchange between the two schools and reached a consensus on further expanding the scale of student exchanges, training levels and strengthening scientific and technological cooperation.Mr.Shen Xiangcong, International Department of Waseda University, attended the talks. Before the talks, Secretary Zhang and his party also met with Minister Okamoto Hiroshi of Waseda University's Campus Planning Department to learn about the investigation of campus infrastructure and planning.

On the evening of August 7, Secretary Zhang held a discussion with some teachers and students of Xi'an Jiaotong University who worked and studied in Japan. At the symposium, the delegation shared the latest progress in school personnel training, scientific research, personnel policy and international cooperation. On behalf of the university, Secretary Zhang expressed condolences to teachers, students and alumni and encouraged alumni to support each other in common development overseas and to continue to care for and support the development of his Alma mater.

On August 8, Secretary Zhang and his party visited the Institute of Physics and Chemistry and held talks with Director Matsumoto, Director Shigeo Koyasu and Director Kato Shigeharu. The two sides reviewed the development of the joint research center, reached consensus on strengthening scientific research cooperation and personnel exchanges, and conducted useful discussions on various forms of cooperation and exchanges. Dr. Michie Ootake, Minister of International Affairs Tanaka Nobuhiko , Director of Curriculum Kirisaki, Teacher Liu Ziyuan and Teacher koba yaxi of Personnel Department attended the talks.

Gu Zhaolin, Executive Vice President of the Institute of Human Settlements and Architectural Engineering of Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xu Feng, Vice President of the Institute of Life, Wang Sheng,Vice President of the Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology, Zhang Wei, Assistant Dean of the Institute of Materials, and He Changzhong, Director of International Affairs, accompanied the visit.
